If you have an octagonal room, octagon rugs are certainly most suitable, otherwise they are not suitable for use in square or rectangular rooms. But most rooms are rectangular or square shaped, therefore a little math will be required to determine whether the rug will fit your no-octagonal room. In order to get an insight of the relative proportions, you first have to calculate total area of the rug and make comparison with that of your room.

No rocket science is required to calculate the area of your rectangular or square shaped room, but for an octagon rugs, it’s a little tricky. For a square or rectangular shaped room you need to measure the length and the width and multiply them to find the area. You can take measurements in feet as a unit of measurement. The following is a simple guide on calculating the area of the octagon rug.

**First step**

Spread the rug on the floor to lay flat. Using a safety pin attached to the rug, tie a string to the pin and attach it to a corner. Keep the string tight by stretching it to the opposite corner and securing it with another pin.

** Second step**

Stretch a string between the opposite corners next in the line in a similar way as in first step. Continue this way until all corners of the octagon are fully dissected by the strings which meet at the center. The crossing strings form small triangles.

**Third step**

Now, using a tape measure, measure the length of the rug’s edges between the pins and mark the midpoint. Mark the distance from one of the pins to the midpoint as point B. Measure the distance from the rug’s center to the marker and label it as H. now the triangle has been divided into two right-angled triangles by the distance marked H.

**Fourth step**

This involves calculating the total area of the rug. Use the formula, Area (A) = 0.5xBxH to calculate the area of a single right-angled triangle. To get the total area of the rug, multiply the resulting area by 16 since there are sixteen such right angle triangles. In short, the total area of the rug will be 16xA.

Now make comparisons between the area of your room and the area of the octagon rug to find out whether the rug will be suitable for your room. Under most circumstance, an octagonal rug might fit well with a squared room than a rectangular room.
